Week 2 Entries

Week 2 Entries

The Great Avery Lane Sewing Bee Week 2.

We have 10 competitors sewing for their dolls and showing off their mad skills.

The challengers found themselves sewing running stitches on yards of fabric and lace for beautiful ruffles for their garments, as this week’s challenge was gathering. Full skirts, puff sleeves, and what not. All their garments are so impressive and what gorgeous fabric choices!

Again, it’s going to a challenge for Dana and me to decide on the Garment of the Week and even harder to decide who is leaving the competition. So many beautiful garments and lovely gathers!!! Take a look.

Alida chose the Party Dress from Doll Dress Boutique, view B. Alida gathered flat lace for the neckline and sleeves. The Party Dress is a challenging pattern, with double layered skirt, binding along the neckline instead of lined, and a v neckline in the back. She accents the back closure with buttons.
Andee , who was maker of the Garment of the Week last week, also chose a pattern from Doll Dress Boutique, Classic Sleeveless Dress, view C “City Girl.” Another challenging pattern. The bodice is pieced together with ruffles sewn in between the seams. Andee topstitched the diagonal ruffle seams with a contrasting red thread,
Angie made a Little Miss Storybook dress, available in my Avery Lane Etsy shop. This pattern has a lot going on and is also challenging with pleats and a ruffle sewn into the skirt just above the hem. The neckline is scooped slightly (jewel neckline) in front and in back. Angie gathered some ribbon to make the ruffled details on top of coordinating purple ribbon along the front placket.
Claire sewed the Ella Dress pattern this week, available in my Avery Lane Etsy shop, which has gathers along the sleeves, in addition to the gathered skirt. Claire chose 2 coordination fabrics, floral print for the bodice and sleeves, and a soft chambray for the skirt, allowing the fabric to take center stage in her design.
Diana chose the Country Dress from Doll Dress Boutique, view E, Hootenanny,. Diana made lots of gathers in the tiered skirt, using 3 different fabrics and hemming it with lace.
Gayle also sewed a pattern from Doll Dress Boutique, Twice as nice from the Square-Neck Dresses chapter, view D, accenting the double layered skirt and waist with coordinating ribbon.
Janet’s entry this week is a Little Miss Storybook dress, which has a lot of gathered pieces. Janet chose to sew the sleeves from view C, which adds gathered bubble sleeve detail. Janet added lace and buttons to the front placket.
Kimberly made the Fiona Fox dress, available in my Avery Lane Etsy shop, which features princess seams on the bodice and a full gathered skirt. Kimberly accents the contrast border hem with rick rack and a handmade fabric flower at the shoulder.
Kristen this week made the Tiered Twirl Skirt from Doll Studio Boutique for her Wellie Wisher doll. Kristen used a combination of red and blue fabrics to sew all those gathers. Kristen used one of the red fabrics to gather an accent ruffle and sewed it to the Simple Top, also found in Doll Studio Boutique, to complete her outfit.
Marlene this week chose to sew the Laura dress pattern, available in my Avery Lane Etsy shop. It is a challenging pattern with many different details, such as sleeve plackets and cuffs, in addition to the full gathered skirt, gathering on the bodice, puff sleeves, and gathering at the cuffs. Marlene added lace along the mock placket on the bodice and at the hem.

So many gathers to examine and judge!! We received close-up photos of all their gathered pieces and it’s a tight competition to be sure. All the entries are gorgeous–this will be hard! I’ll post the results as soon as Dana and I have gone through our notes together and make our final decisions.
