Finished Projects
So much going on in the sewing room. I’ve finished some more gifts, project samples for sewing classes, and some just for fun projects.
I made this Flipping Out case for my daughters BFF and a linen apron for my sister. I’ll write up a separate post with a review of the Flipping Out pattern (pattern by Annie), but here’s the finished project out in the wild being used.
My daughter’s friend and housemate crochets, but didn’t have a place to store and use their hooks. Their favorite color is olive green, so I was thrilled to use some fabric I’ve had and I adore. You know the ones in your stash that you take out and admire, pet, and then feel the project isn’t good enough? I think it worked beautifully with this project.
The linen apron was self drafted/designed.
My sister loves to bake and cook. She is amazing. She lives in Lake Tahoe and is always baking bread and making soups for her neighbors. They have dealt with a lot of storms this winter and often have no power. She prepares for the storm and possible power outage by making extra. She checks on her neighbors and makes sure they have what they need. Her banana bread is a favorite around her community. In fact, they will sometimes bring her ripe bananas to donate and encourage more banana bread baking.
Anyway, I thought it would be nice to have a pretty apron to wear when she makes her rounds. It also has some personalized features. She wears chef aprons and drapes a hand towel through the waist ties, so I thought having an attached apron would be handy.
I bought the toweling fabric at my local quilt shop. Hemmed it and attached it to the waistband with pleats, so it would poof out a little and be easier to dry her hands on.
I thought of delivery all these delicious meals in the snow, she may want a secure place for her phone. I made a pocket just big enough for a phone, so it would rest flat and not pull the pocket away from the apron.
I haven’t done a buttonhole on my new machine, so it was nice to test those out. It makes beautiful buttonholes. I know she and I both don’t like to have that extra bulk around the neck with aprons that have neck ties, so I knew I wanted to have the neck strap attached with a button.
I also have a sewing camp for kids this spring break and wanted to remake some of the project samples, give them some freshening up. See upcoming classes here.
Here are some bags the students can choose to make in the afternoon Sewing Club, open sew class.
And a quilted journal cover (Beginning Sewing Program project), though my cats were trying to photo bomb. Here’s Stanley being a part of the activity.
A fun project just for me…
A new dress for Sasha.
To create the dress, I redrafted my Simple Top pattern, found in Sew in Style and Doll Studio Boutique, to fit Sasha. This pink top was not the final version, but fit well enough. I wanted to play around with dress lengths, so I added a pleated skirt to the top. I shortened the top by about an inch and added a rectangle skirt piece.
The fabric is an Art Gallery Fabrics print. It’s soft and drapes nicely for a quilting cotton. It seems to behave more like a light-weight poplin, a bit classier. I think it’s sweet. You should definitely try it for the other dolls with the pattern in my books. It really is a quick and easy pattern to sew up.
Happy Sewing!
