Blog Tour: Me & My 18″ Doll

Hello and welcome to last and final stop on the Me & My 18” Doll book blog tour!

Shown on cover: Twirl skirts with sashes, View A (double gathered skirt) and B (pleated)

It has been so great to see all the things the other bloggers posted, projects and reviews. I’m grateful for each of them and to all of you following along. I hope the tour has inspired you to sew some lovingly handmade gifts for someone special on your list this holiday season!

Me & My 18″ Doll has a little something for everyone. Inspired by and dedicated to my grandma Mayme, who made many of my clothes while I was growing up and who sent me handmade toys as gifts each year.  Me & My 18″ Doll has 2 quilt patterns that are perfect to adorn a little girls room, purses and playful clothing projects, pyjamas and suitcases to make. All the projects include the patterns for both little girls and 18″ Doll sizes. There’s no need to go searching for matching girl patterns–they are included so you can get sewing right away!

Emma’s Garden Quilt, Summer Breeze Sundress
Little Handbag with a Bow
Postage Stamp Suitcase

Earlier in the tour I released these bonus patterns:

Summer Breeze View C (bonus pattern)
Ruffle Playshorts (bonus pattern)

Today, I’m thrilled to share with you another bonus pattern: a Lacy Top variation.

Lacy Top View A
Lacy Top View B

This variation adds lace to the arm openings and a different technique for the waist. I used an eyelet cotton fabric for my top.

Lacy Top Bonus Pattern

It pairs nicely with play shorts and skirts. Shown with the Nature Walk Skirt, page 49.

Here is an eyelet Lacy Top for dolls, shown with the Twirly A-line Skirt project (free for those participating in my virtual launch party. Materials Needed (in addition to the materials listed in the book for View A, page 45)

Girl

½ yard narrow lace, cut into 2 pieces

⅓ yard bias tubing or bias tape for bow

Doll

⅓ yard narrow lace, cut into 2 pieces

¼ yard bias tubing or bias tape for bow

Sewing Instructions

Sew the Top using the instructions on page 46 – 47, with a couple of changes.

Add Lace to Armholes before Finishing the Armholes

  1. Sew gathering stitches on the lace and gather to fit the armhole.
  2. Pin and sew the lace to the armholes, with right sides together, tapering the end of the lace 1-2” (girl) or ½-¾” (doll) before the side seam edge as shown.
  3. After sewing the lace to the top, trim raw edge of the lace to be even with the top fabric.
  4. Finish the armholes as directed on page 46.

Hem Variation

  1. Hem the lower edge by folding ¼” twice, pressing after each fold, and sewing across the folded fabric.
  2. Cut a piece of elastic 1” less than the hip measurement. Girl Only: sew the ends together to form a loop.
  3. Divide the elastic into quarters.
  4. Pin the quarter points to the wrong side of the top at the sides, center front, and center back points, 1½” above the hem (girl) or ¾” above the hem (doll).
  5. Sew the elastic directly to the fabric, using a zigzag stitch and stretching the elastic as you sew to fit the width of the fabric in each quarter section.

Finish by sewing a little bow to one side of the front.

What a pretty top this is for little girls!
