Little House on the Prairie
So recently I discovered Andover fabrics has created some Little House on the Prairie Fabrics and is having a mini quilt show/class in Portland. Both Avery and I are so excited–we LOVE Little House on the Prairie. We have some of the DVDs and have watched them for years. I watched them as a child in the 70’s and loved Laura! I immediately bought tickets for Avery and me to attend.
They encouraged us to make things using the Andover fabrics and bring our finished projects with us. Avery researched quilts that were made during Laura’s childhood and chose one to sew. I also decided to make a doll quilt and doll outfit, immediately thinking about how Grace would make a very nice Laura–although she has blue eyes and Laura did not 🙁 . I don’t really have a good “Mary” doll here.
Then there was the problem of finding the fabrics. I called and it seemed the closest bolt was far away. As luck would have it, we needed to go to Grants Pass for a soccer game (yes, I know it’s almost at the California border [sigh]). Well, there were 3 bolts there calling us, so we bought some! and I made a little dress just like the one I remember Melissa Gilbert wearing a lot.
But Laura would not have had matching bonnet. She would have been making do and her mom would have used what fabric she had left over from other projects. I had almost just left it without a sunbonnet, when my local quilt shop got in 4 bolts on Friday! I quickly bought some and made a sunbonnet for Laura to wear to the class on Saturday.
Laura wore her bonnet like this on the show 🙂
It’s been so fun watching the show after school for the last few weeks and researching historical fashions and quilts with my daughter. My Laura dress has growth pleats and is designed for a girl her age…Carrie would have had a shorter dress and Mary a slightly longer dress probably.
I can’t wait to start on my quilt! But it will have to wait until next week 🙂
