Snowball Quilt Block Tutorial
We had such a fun meeting yesterday with my Youth Quilt Guild: the Willamette Piece Makers! We had a great “field trip” within the quilt shop -searching for quilt blocks that we have made so far. We talked more about finding the quilt block within the quilt, the value of color and how contrast can enhance the quilt design, and looked at all the different ways in which the quilts were quilted. We also got to admire the new long arm machine!
After that we made snowball blocks!
This was a great choice for beginners! We had 12 kids and they finished these blocks in no time at all. The more advanced students made several and I ran out of fabric. They were so thrilled with their blocks and everyone left with a smile on their face 🙂 — which is what it’s all about!! A big thank you to Timeless Treasures for donating the gorgeous fabric!!
This tutorial was made for the guild’s website, but I thought I’d share it here as well.
Snowball Quilt Block, finished size is 9″
For each block, cut:
9 1/2″ square (1)
3 1/2″ squares (4)
Step 1
Draw a diagonal line, corner to corner, on the wrong side of each 3 1/2″ square.
Step 2
Pin each 3 1/2″ square to a corner of the 9 1/2″ square, with right sides together and keeping the edges even.
Step 3
Sew along the drawn diagonal line.
Step 4
Cut off the edge of the corners, about 1/4″ from the stitching line.
Step 5
Press the seam allowances.
Step 6
Admire your beautiful block! Or better yet, make several more!
