More from the Youth Quilt Guild

We held our November meeting last week and it went really well. We voted on a name. We saw some kid-made projects. We talked about the Value of fabric (not how much it costs).  We made quilt blocks. We had a lot of fun. I wish I had taken more pictures and remembered to take a group pic of all the kids and their finished blocks together. It’s hard to remember to do that when we get so into our sewing!

Wow! This quilt by one of our youth is absolutely amazing. Look at all her half square triangles!!

Her younger sister brought in a quilt block she had made, but I forgot to get a picture (we get so busy sewing that I get caught up in all the fun!). It was her very first sewing project ever! Very impressive all around.

We did a fun exercise putting the fabric in order of value. Then I showed them the same fabric in a black and white photo to see how we did. The kids did very well. We used the gorgeous fabric that Timeless Treasures donated for the quilting cause! Thank you! It was perfect for the season and the kids loved all the sparkle!

The kids then made quilt blocks. I gave them the choice of 3 blocks this time, which worked really well.  A beginner level, intermediate, and more advanced level blocks were the choices.

Here are the beginner blocks

Intermediate (she caught her mistake, but we were out of time. She’s going pick out the stitches and re-sew that row onto the opposite side at home–I hope she brings it back to show us her completed work!)

The complicated Churn Dash Block. [did I mention it was a little busy and I forgot to take pictures of everyone’s blocks?]

Notice the youth’s block looks different then my example? After we did the value exercise, all the kids making the churn dash block sewed it this way, because it has a better contrast. Clever, aren’t they!? I can’t wait to see her completed project with all her churn dash blocks she took home with her 🙂

We will be setting up a blog soon. We’ll be able to keep updated on what’s coming up and keep track of what we’ve been up to. I’m looking forward to getting that all organized and to next month’s meeting!
