Modern Hexagon Snowflake Placemat Tutorial
Although I think this will be the last hexagon project for a little while, I’m still feeling the Hexagon Love over here. When this gorgeous Timeless Treasures’ Ice fabric collection arrived on my doorstep, I knew just what I wanted to do with them – a hexagon snowflake design! These winter themed place mats will live at my house and will work so well throughout the winter. My youngest daughter is making a hexagon log cabin hot pad to match and I will share that as soon as she finishes 🙂
A raw edge appliqué technique makes this super fast to make. Many fusible web products are designed to be permanent without stitching the edges of the appliqués. At a trade show I recently attended, I saw many quilts that used an all-over free-motion quilting technique instead of individually stitching each appliqué in place.
Hexagon Snowflake Placemat Quilting Tutorial
Supplies Needed
AccuQuilt Cutting Die: Hexagons #55011 Or hexagon ruler/template .
Fusible web
Fabrics needed for each placemat (note: light blue and dark blue can be reversed for coordinating placemats):
Hexagons: scraps or fat quarters of dark blue fabric
Top: 1 fat quarter of light blue fabric
Backing: 1 fat quarter of fabric
Batting: 18.5″ X 12.5″
Binding: 75″
Cutting Instructions
Top: 18″ X 12″
Backing: 19″ X 13″
Batting: 18.5″ X 12.5″
Hexagons:
1. If using scraps: Cut 2.5″ squares from fusible web and fuse them to the wrong side of the dark blue fabric.
Note: If using fat quarters:, then you could cut strips of fusible web 2 1/2″ wide, fuse the strips to strips of fabric that are 3′ wide, and cut the strips into squares for stacks of 4 to cut.
I did both methods and both worked well.
2. Trim the fabric to the fusible web and arrange the fabric onto the small hexagon on the AccuQuilt Go cutting die.
3. Place the cutting mat on top and cut out a bunch of hexagons. You need 13 hexagons for the snowflake on each placemat.
Sewing Instructions
Making the Placemat:
1. Fold and press the solid color fabric to find its center.
2. Arrange the hexagons onto the right side of the light blue fabric, placing the center hexagon of the snowflake design at the center of the light blue fabric. Continue to place the hexagons into the snowflake design with 1/4″ gap in between each.
3. Once you are happy with the placement, fuse the hexagons in place, by peeling off the paper backing and pressing in place with an iron.
4. Make a quilt sandwich by layering the backing, batting, and top fabric together. Use basting spray or pin the quilt sandwich together.
5. Quilt the quilt sandwich as desired.
I stitched all the hexagons in place, 1/8″ from the edges.
6. Square up the place mat and bind it using your preferred method.
Happy quilting!
