Youth Quilt Guild
We had our first youth quilt guild meeting last week and a great time was had by all! It was a great turnout -14 kids!
It was a little touch and go as I talked through the “business” portion–they seriously looked panicked, as if they were thinking to themselves, “Oh, no. Is this going to be just like school?” But once I stopped talking and we got to the sewing, it was very clear things were going to be all right.
We made these simple uneven 9-patch blocks together, using Happy Haunting fabrics by Riley Blake. The girls loved the fabric…sometimes sewing is all about the fabric–am I right?
Hopefully, we will get a name for our guild picked soon, start a blog to record and keep ourselves organized, and find sponsors to help us keep this quilty-fun going.
Things I’ve learned about sewing with kids:
- Modern and fun fabrics go over much better than traditional, muted colored fabrics
- Keep it simple and all about the process, not the technical or perfect seams, etc.
- Don’t talk too much
- Remember it’s their project, and only they have to like it
- Have fun!
Thanks for stopping by!
