Doll Skirt Sew Along Day 1

Doll Skirt Sew Along Day 1

Welcome to our Doll Skirt Sew Along.  We are using pattern #5 from Sew in Style -Make Your Own Doll Clothes and changing things up a bit,  like I did to create the purple skirt with lace shown on page 110. Since there are so many different trims available, I will be showing a variety of ways to sew these trims to the skirt and embellish this pattern for a bunch of different looks using the 1 pattern.

First up: Crochet Lace.

Let’s get started!

You’ll need a fat quarter or 1/4 yard of fabric to cut out pattern #5.

Step 1 Cut Out the Fabric

Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut along the cutting lines. Remember to place the fold line on the pattern along the fold line of the fabric.

Step 2 Hem the Skirt

I am using a very petite rose bud floral from Riley Blake. It has a  vintage-look to me and the color is a soft peach. I thought the crochet lace would compliment it well, so those are the lace I decided to use for this skirt.

Since crochet lace has  finished edges (and no raw edges), this means I can hem the skirt first. So for this skirt, that’s just what I did. I followed the instructions for a double folded  hem on page 27.

Step 3 Choose a Lace

Interview some different crochet laces.

Using crochet lace also means I could place the  lace on the outside (right side of the fabric) or place it on the inside and have it peeking out beneath the hem.

Try placing different trims on the skirt to see which trim you like best.

Step 4 Sew the Lace to the Skirt

IF I wanted it on the inside, with just a little of the lace “peeking” out beneath the hem, then I would  pin the lace to the bottom edge on the wrong side of the fabric.

After trying out a few different ideas, I chose to place the lace on the outside of the skirt. Pinned it in place on the right side of the fabric and sewed across the lace to create this type of hem.

But I liked this lace best.

I can now follow  steps 5 – 7 on page 47 to finish the skirt.

Next post, I will show a different way of hemming the skirt with trims.
