Little Quilt Blocks

Little Quilt Blocks

I’m finally getting started on my Farmer’s Wife quilt blocks. Everything else seems to be getting in the way of this. But I did have a chance this weekend, in between birthday parties and cleaning.

I started by getting organized. It seems the book is designed around these commercial acrylic templates. Templates I do not own, nor do I wish to purchase. Some of the blocks have to be cut out with the paper templates instead of a rotary cutting method that I’m used to. All the blocks can also be done using a foundation paper pieced together method. There are rotary cutting measurements for many of the pieces, but not all. All of this was a bit overwhelming to take in.  I wasn’t sure where to begin at first. The book is really just the letters and images of the finished blocks, and a little help in the back.

It’s the CD that has all the info for making the blocks, so I printed several pages for each block I wanted to sew. I decided it would be best to be organized from the start with this project, so I got a binder to keep all the papers in and got to work.

Brought out my mini design boards. I made them using Lori Holt’s tutorial on her blog, Bee in my Bonnet. You can see her tutorial here:

Started adding the corresponding letters onto the block diagrams.

Then I thought it would be better (and faster) to write all the measurements directly onto the diagram pages (I”m not sure why this wasn’t done for us–it seems so logical and helpful. I guess because not all the blocks have measurements for rotary cutting. sigh.)

Cut out and designed a couple blocks–although not the cutest blocks in the bunch.

That’s as far as I got, but I’m very excited to get sewing. I hope to have more to share soon!
