Hexagon Cupcake Appliqué Tutorial
The gift making continues in my house. I’m onto doing some quick gifts. I’m doing several baking mixes in Mason Jar gifts, but I wanted to add a little special something to make them a bit more personal. I bought some kitchen dish towels and I’m embellishing them.
Here’s how I did the Cupcake design.
Materials Needed
Store-bought dish towel (pre-washed!)
Scraps of fabric
A hexagon template with 5″ sides or Accuquilt Hexagon die cutter #55011
A strip of fabric for the ruffle frosting (pre-made trim or plain ribbon can also be used–see below)
A large button
Fusible web
Tear-away stabilizer
Making the Hexagon Cupcake Appliqué Dish Towel
Make the Hexagon Cupcake
1. Cut out 2 fabric hexagons with 5″ sides (the largest size on the AccuQuilt die)
2. Cut a hexagon (also with 5″ sides) out of the fusible web.
I cut all 3 hexagons at the same time, unattached fusible web, the cupcake top, and the cupcake bottom.
3. Cut each fabric hexagon 1/4″ from the center line of symmetry.
4. Sew the 2 larger halves together, with a 1/4″ seam allowance and press the seam open.
5. Fuse the fusible web to the wrong side of the pieced hexagon
6. Fuse the hexagon to the dish towel. Make sure the hexagon is opposite the corner with the twill tape hanging strip if there is one.
7. Satin stitch the hexagon cupcake in place, using stabilizer on the wrong side.
Make the Ruffle Frosting
1. Finish the long edges of a strip of fabric approximately 10-12 inches long. I used a rolled hem setting and wooly nylon thread on my serger to do this.
2. Sew a single row of gathering stitches in a zigzag pattern across the strip of fabric.
Alternative Choices:
Pre-made trim can be used
Or use a ribbon instead of fabric
3. Pull the bobbin thread to gather the fabric (or ribbon) until it has a ruffled-wavy look.
4. Cut it 1″ longer than the cupcake’s center seam. Tuck the ends under and sew it to the cupcake. I use Wonder Tape to hold it in place.
Finishing
1. Sew a large button on top if you want a cherry on top.
This would look adorable on an apron or child’s tee. I hope you enjoy using this tutorial!
