After several requests, I have finally made my Beginning Sewing Program available for others as a teacher materials kit with lesson plans to purchase and use to teach beginning sewing classes in your local areas. The Teacher’s Kit will include all the materials needed to teach kids the basic sewing skills. These basic skills will enable kids to make many beginning projects. It will also help you to develop a sewing program with a steady flow of students over time. The Teacher’s Kit includes a teacher’s guide to help teach each class and patterns for 2 simple first projects.

This program has evolved over a few years of teaching sewing classes. I developed it as an alternative to beginning project-based beginner classes–I always found these classes problematic, because several students would show up never having touched a machine and it was expected for them to finish a project within a short amount of time. This was often frustrating for the students, and much less than ideal for me as the teacher. I often found myself trying to give these students a crash course in how to use a sewing machine and then hurrying through a project as best we could. Not the best way to introduce a child to sewing.

My Beginning Program has been very successful and my students say it’s a very fun class! It is designed to take students from the very beginning, provide students with a firm foundation in basic sewing skills, and foster independent sewing skills. In a relaxed and organized classroom, children are learning at their own pace, given all the tools they need to be successful, and having fun with other kids working through their workbooks to learn these valuable basics. Once the workbook skills are completed, the students utilize these skills they’ve just learned to make 2 fun  projects.

The Teacher’s Kit will include:

  • Curriculum and Lesson Plan Outline
  • A Seams and Samples Book that you will print for each student, which works as both a workbook and curriculum
  • Patterns for the first 2 projects
  • A very detailed lesson plan, which includes tips for teaching children to sew that I have learned over the years
  • Everything you need to get started, from how to prep for class and how to set up the classroom
  • Unlimited help and guidance from me

After the kids take this beginning program they have the knowledge and confidence to go on to take a number of other sewing classes, such as quilting classes or project-based classes. I offer many different types of classes and teach sewing camps throughout the summer. Many of my students go on to take my “Sewing Club” classes, in which they choose from a number of projects and continue to develop their skills. Many students bring their Sew in Style books and sew for their dolls as well. The possibilities are endless!

I’m very excited to offer this Teacher’s Kit, as I know it will bring the love of sewing to many young people! And make teaching kids to sew much easier for those who want to start earning a little extra money. This kit will enable you as a teacher to approach quilt shops and start a teaching program in your area.
